Rehab nurses practice in a variety of settings with clients of all ages. Our rehab provides 24 hour a day access to registered nurses with specialized training in rehabilitation. Working with clients with chronic illnesses or injuries is a challenge not suited to all nurses. Rehab nursing is listening to the patient and deciphering what his or her goals are. The challenges of getting a patient to an optimal level of wellness after a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or spinal cord injury, are much greater and take a longer period of time.
What makes inpatient rehab nursing unique is that it uses data collected from an array of specialty care providers to deliver individualized patient care. Our inpatient rehab hospital team consists of the client, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, a dietitian, a pharmacist, a physician, a nurse, a case manager, and perhaps a speech therapist or respiratory therapist. In rehab, we talk about interdisciplinary care, as opposed to multi-disciplinary care. The latter implies that there are several disciplines working with a client, but not necessarily in a coordinated manner. At AMG Physical Rehab Hospital, we all work together to coordinate the care of that client… it’s truly a team approach to care.
